3rd Annual Jimm Revelle Memorial Racquetball Tournament

Living Fit Sports Club - Westminster, MD
Saturday November 7th - 9 AM to approx 5 PM
Lunch begins about 12 Noon.. Silent auction items awarded around 2:00 PM

Last year's tourney made $3,787.00.. all of which went to the Jimm Revelle Fund. Kathy and Joe Cornell have again organized a tournament to honor Jimm's memory, and benefit the Revelle family.

The original goal of this event and Jimm's story:
Jimm's family is in constant need of financial assistance due to Jimm's long hospitalization. Jimm Revelle was a good friend who spent a large part of his career at Maryland Public TV involved with AM Weather, Wall Street Week With Louis Rukeyser, and many other local and national MPT productions. Prior to his illness he had been freelancing as a TV camera operator and studio director in the Baltimore and D.C. area. Since late May of 2007 he had been in the hospital. A blocked bile duct caused an inflammation of his pancreas that turned into acute pancreatitis. He spent eight and a half months fighting for his life at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, where he underwent numerous surgeries and suffered from unfortunate complications that kept him in the surgical intensive care unit in critical condition. He never recovered.. and died on February 18th, 2008 after suffering a massive stroke. All of his care cost incredible amounts of money.. money that the family did not, and does not have.

Racquetball had been one of Jimm's favorite activities. For him it was a rich source of camaraderie, exercise, and friendly competition. In fact, it was mentioned that his solid physical condition prior to his illness helped him to fight as hard and long as he did. A racquetball tournament was seen as the perfect way for Jimm's friends to get involved and earn extra funds to help in supporting the Revelle family.

He played at the Living Fit(formerly Olympus)Sports Club in Westminster, and it is there that
the Jimm Revelle Memorial Racquetball Tournament is held. The club is owned and operated by Chris Owens, who has generously donated the club's racquetball facilities for the event on Saturday November 7th, 2009.
The tournament is organized by longtime friends Kathy and Joe Cornell, former owners of the club, and championship caliber racquetball players in their own right. Jimm's racquetball buddies and others who have an interest in this cause are also helping to make the event a success.

In anticipation of next year's 30th Anniversary.. the history of the original Leisure Racquetball Club, started in February of 1980 by Charlie Winterstein, is being highlighted.. and Charlie has received a special honor. See more details and some neat pictures at right.

Special note: The families and friends of others affiliated with the club who are no longer with us were welcomed too! In addition to the Revelle family, we also asked friends and family of Wayne Kirker, Dave Coates, Megan Taylor, Dan Stephens, Randy Daily, Terry Burke, Paul Long, Chris Audet, Barclay Brown, Steve Clay, Stephanie Caparola and Norm Smith to join us.. and enjoy our special tournament lunch.
This is all part of an effort by Kathy and Joe to create a more inclusive yearly event that endeavors to honor the rich contribution that others have made in the lives of us all. It is our feeling that Jimm, who genuinely loved people, would approve.. and in fact share our pride in this wonderful event.

Donors and Supporters

It takes a lot of folks, working in a lot of different ways, to make something like this happen. In past tournaments a total of more than $8,300.00 has been collected. Add to this the $3,440.00 from this event, and we jump past $10,000.00 to $11,740.00 as the grand total earned for the Jimm Revelle Fund by our tournaments. Thanks to everyone for their help. This is an organization that has enabled us to create the Jimm Revelle Fund.. and to offer concerned friends the ability to make tax deductible contributions. In return, the JR Fund's size permitting, CFCC will assist in paying outstanding medical bills and other expenses that insurance has not covered. Each contribution will be answered with a 'thank-you' and a receipt for tax purposes.
